ADI Part 3 is the final stage of your journey to becoming fully qualifiedADI Part 3 is the final stage of your journey to becoming fully qualifiedADI Part 3 is the final stage of your journey to become a qualified Driving Instructor.

Up to October, 2017, Part 3 involves a senior DVSA examiner role playing the part of a learner on what is known as a pre-set test.

In the very near future, the whole of the Part 3 test will change as part of the DVSA's drive to improve standards.

DVSA are awaiting the approval of Parliament to introduce the changes (they've been put back a couple of times) but the necessary approval is expected very soon.

On the new test you will be required to give a driving lesson to a real pupil. The examiner will sit in the back seat of the car and will closely observe the lesson.

The pupil you take on test can be anyone other than an ADI. In other words, you can take a fully qualified driver for 'refresher' training, or a learner who's never had lessons before, or someone who's almost at test standard. You can take anyone you want except a qualified instructor.

Our sister site, Approved Driving Instructor Training, has a wealth of advice on all aspects of ADI Part 3. The pre-set test section will soon be out of date but the rest is directly relevant. Once we know the full details of the changes we'll be fully updating and re-writing our sister site.
